How Can I Support Independent Journalism?
Howdy, folks. I am Laura Chesner, the Owner and Editor of Central Texas Star. I am a journalist who loves Central Texas and wants to shine a light on the progressive folks, businesses, groups and organizations who are working to make a change in their community. Not only that, but I hope to reach as far south as Navasota, as far North as Marlin, as far west as Rockdale and as far east as Madisonville. I have friends and family all over Central Texas and I love to hear and tell their stories.
I know that the progressives in our region can feel alone and a little scared sometimes. I want to remind you that whether you are a farmer who believes in vaccines and the truth about climate change, or a school teacher who is concerned about the level of education you are allowed to bring to the classroom, or just a person who sees history repeating itself and want to find a tribe of people who want to start moving it forward again, I am here to tell your stories.
How can you help?
First off, I need you to let me know you’re out there. I want to hear from religious groups who are trying to find ways to support our immigrant friends and families, or a business who partners with women’s health care providers to provide free birth control, or a student who is concerned about the future value of your diploma, please don’t hesitate to email me.

If you can afford to help out in a monetary way, please consider subscribing to the digital newspaper. While it is currently free to use, we hope to bring extras to our subscribers in the near future, such as vegan recipes, stickers, and a monthly e-edition that comes straight to your inbox. Our subscriptions are $40.00/year, which comes to about $1.25/week. A portion of the subscription price goes back to the amazing web developers and publishers at the Community Journalism Project. This organization helps small newsrooms across the US become digital newsrooms with ease and with no cost to either the consumer or the owner. The group simply takes a very (embarrassingly so) small amount of each subscription across each newspaper site to maintain their small staff of dedicated web developers and news editors. They are also wonderful at helping new digital news sites get published quickly and respond to their editors needs. Their aim is to help local news stay relevant and available without breaking the banks of the readers or newspapers.

Do you do advertising?
Yes! - Our advertising is based on a cooperative model. We have certain goals in mind for the business, such as a printer, having more money to pay for stories and photos, and purchasing small pieces of equipment for digital news media. We want to be able to provide the news in as up-to-date manner possible, but it takes money and people to make that happen. So, our advertisers and subscribers are considered “members” of the news coop.
