After Much Anticipation, Calvert’s Senior Center Celebrates Grand Reopening
The Calvert Senior Center has undergone a full transformation after a fire that devastated the building’s kitchen late last year. Under the leadership of Tanner Swope, Project Manager for Synergy NDS, the many companies brought in to work through the Texas Municipal League Insurance Program swiftly got the job done. The talented remediation teams, plumbers, electricians, HVAC technicians and general contractors not only returned the Senior Center to its occupants in good condition, there were significant upgrades made to the center to keep it usable for many years to come.
Wednesday, May 7, the community came out to celebrate the newly reopened center with snacks, proclamations and fellowship. The new Mayor, James Evans, opened the celebration with a warm welcome to attendees and a gracious acknowledgment of everyone’s efforts in bringing the center back. Evans’ remarks were followed by the Hearne American Legion Honor Guard presenting colors and the pledge of allegiance by attendees.
The entire crowd was wowed by the Calvert Belle’s rendition of The National Anthem and blessed by the invocation that followed.
County Judge Jo David Scarpinato spoke about the importance of the center and the many communities that it serves. That fact was expressed by the many people in the crowd who regularly come to the center from Hearne, Franklin and Bremond. Scarpinato talked about the many needs that the center fulfills, especially that of fellowship and friendship.
Mayor Evans finished the ceremony off with remarks about the future of Calvert and the Senior Center before calling up many of the key figures in reaching the goal. Beatrice Cephas, Sergio Loya as a representative for the City of Calvert, and Tanner Swope deserve a large portion of the thanks for the final product, as they each had a large part to play in making it happen. Each member of City Council can be proud of the work as well, as they made the quick and decisive action to move forward on the remodel.
After the Mayor’s closing remarks, members of the Chamber of Commerce wielded the giant scissors and red ribbon and officially cut the ribbon on the grand reopening. Snacks and drinks were provided for those in attendance from Los Tres Gorditos as well as desserts donated by locals, as they were encouraged to tour the facility and see all the amazing upgrades. Mina Davis, operator of the food pantry in Calvert, was on hand to answer questions as well as booths explaining several services available in the community. The people of the CIty of Calvert have a great Senior Center to be proud of, and Beatrice Cephas wants to remind everyone that anyone can visit.
A healthy Robertson County requires great community news.
