City of Calvert to Play Host For Juneteenth For First Time
The City of Calvert is excited to team up with the Alumni of the W.D. Spigner School to host what they both hope to become the first of many Juneteenth Celebrations. The City Administration has been working closely with the Alumni Association as well as members of the community to create an entire day of fun for the whole family.
The party kicks off at 11:00 am at the Spigner School, located at 801 W. Texas Avenue, in Calvert. The day of fun begins with performances by the Dazzling Divas of Elegance and the Spiritual Harmonets. Kids will have plenty to do all day long, as the organizers have tons of great kids activities planned throughout the day. From face painting to snow cones, the kiddos will be having a blast.
Adults will have a great time, too, as DJ Sha keeps people dancing to the beats, while they play bingo, spades or dominos or join in the dance competition throughout the day. Plenty of food and drink vendors will be around to keep everyone fed and hydrated, while they enjoy the day.
The guest speaker for the event will be Dr. Charles Babers, who is an Alumnus who went on to graduate from West Point. Babers is a data analyst as well as a published author, and he is excited to relay his message of hope to the crowds.
The organizers want all Calvert residents to know that they are welcome at the party, and that this will be a Texas Sized Juneteenth celebration that will be fun for all Texans who wish to join.
"We hope to see folks from both the East side and West side of Calvert at the celebration. We have much to celebrate, and it would be great to enjoy the progress we've made, together," expressed City Councilwoman, Bobby Alford.
The theme for this year's celebration is "Breaking Every Chain: Honoring the Past, Celebrating Progress" and the organizers plan to showcase that progress at the event.
